Our applied research began in the mid-1990s with one clear goal: to create a healthier, safer hydration strategy for workers in demanding environments. Since then, we’ve conducted over 2,000 tests to measure sweat volume and analyse electrolyte composition. This extensive data has allowed us to identify the critical components required for an effective hydration solution—one that truly supports health and safety on the job.

SAFETY & PRODUCTIVITY

When combating dehydration, the priority is ensuring workers consume enough fluid to minimize blood volume reduction and electrolyte loss. In hot environments, wearing personal protective equipment significantly increases heat load, making sweating essential for maintaining a safe core temperature.

Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost through sweat. Consuming excessive plain water can dilute blood sodium levels, increasing the risk of further sodium depletion.

We’ve studied sweat—its physiology, volume, electrolyte composition, and how the body manages heat while working in demanding environments. Glamorous? Not quite—but essential.

We’ve also examined the digestive system, focusing on the stomach’s limitations and how they impact fluid balance under heat stress.

What did we learn? Sodium is the most critical electrolyte for workers to monitor when sweat loss occurs.

How do we know? By analyzing the electrolyte composition of sweat from over 2,000 athletes and industry workers, giving us the data to design hydration strategies that actually work.

ELECTROLYTE CONCENTRATION IN SWEAT 

DATA:

The concentration of electrolytes sodium, potassium and magnesium in sweat of 16 subjects. They cycled at 80% max / HR for one hour in 22 degrees and 45% humidity. The results of this test show the disparity between electrolytes lost in sweat. The concentration of electrolytes lost in sweat is measured in milligrams per one-litre of sweat. In this test the electrolyte composition per one-litre of sweat averaged out at - sodium 1061 mg. - potassium 195 mg - magnesium 3 mg.
